Phoebe Nir Shines With New Release ‘Side Hustle’

By DOTTIE PARIS

Phoebe Nir shows her range on her debut EP Side Hustle for True Groove Records.

This singer-songwriter has a bright future. The music is fun and upbeat. And if Phoebe is using the record to demonstrate her vocal range and her ability to sing just about anything, then Side Hustle is a success.

Phoebe wrote and performs almost every song on the EP. The title track “Side Hustle” is the strongest song on the album in a purely musical presentation sense. It’s a great tune, with alluring vocals, a great horn section and a funky beat.  The song itself is seductive and illustrates the talent of a singer-songwriter who appears to be a gregarious team player.

Phoebe has a good sense of humor as evidenced by the songs on the EP and the attitude with which she delivers them.  “Film School,” “Joe,” “The Broken Parts,” and “Oh Ana,” all take on different tones and times in Phoebe’s life and her work largely seems to be an auditory diary for the avid listener.

Phoebe’s vocal talents would be welcomed in any arena, from the live theatre stage to a TV commercial.  She has performed at some of New York’s hottest venues, including Joe’s Pub and 54 Below. She was received at the White House by President Obama as a Presidential Scholar of the Arts.  She is currently developing a Broadway-bound musical theater trilogy, ‘Diana and Navy’ with composer-producer Tomás Doncker, founder of True Groove Records. Check out Phoebe’s website here.
