Free admission, free beer and wine. Host gallery The MIME in Echo Park was abuzz with a couple of hundred music lovers and it was welcoming to new artists, creative types and up-and-comers.  The purpose?  Simply to hear some new bands play some new music.

Kid Bloom, The Glam Skanks, Hypnotic Hyena and The Brothers Collective packed the house as music lovers came for the tunes and a good time.

“This is really great and I’ve enjoyed the bands I’ve seen so far tonight,” said Travis who relocated from Seattle to California. “The musicians here are really supportive of each other.”

Co-sponsors Echo Box Music and Unison Music want to bring live music from new artists to the masses and they’re willing to spend money to do it. The MIME was truly the place to be rub elbows with musicians, artists, producers, photographers and press and to even have a free beer on a Saturday night.

Was the music hot?  Yes.  Was the place physically hot?  Definitely. And in that way, it was very easy to imagine what the other kids were enduring at that little festival in the desert this weekend.  Both sets of fans were thirsty — for new music.  The fans in the desert shelled out the $350-plus to hear what the record companies deem to be the best new music of our time.
