Review: Greg and the Granules ‘Answer to Influence’

By DOTTIE PARIS

It’s always refreshing when we find an artist who is true to himself. Too many today are creating music  that sounds the same as everyone else. We’re tired of the chirpy, quiet, helpless airhead songs and we’re so happy to discover unique talent.

Greg and the Granules certainly appreciate and employ a range of genres.  The band, powered by Greg Maechling, mix alternative, country, Hawaiian and renaissance rock.  Sounds bizarre, but somehow the songs are extremely unique and cool and the result is magical.

Answer to Influence is the debut EP from Los Angeles-based Greg and the Granules. Maechling is the frontman for the So Cal surf band Particle Wave.  The new album focuses on taking a look at reality.

Nick Luca (Iron and Wine, Calexico, Neko Case) produces; with drums and percussion designed and performed by Joe Westerlund (Megafaun, Califone, Grandma Sparrow).

Maechling performs vocals and guitar, Nick Luca plays guitar and keyboard, and Joe Westerlund plays various instruments. Tyler Shields engineers with Maechling and Luca at New Monkey Studios in Van Nuys.

Answer to Influence floats with ease through myriad layers of resonating expression to create a transporting experience of calmness and comfort for the listener.
